Joe Simes, who along with his wife Christine owns Elysium Arts, describes a folk club as a place where folk who love music can gather to hear performers from near and far. The Simes have created a venue in the Lower Mill in Rollinsford that is intimate and comfortable, where the music is the main focus. The Folk Club hosts all genres of music; their calendar includes folk, latin, jazz, electronica, and world music.
Joe Simes has been a music lover all his life, playing in local bands. As he got older he became more and more interested in acoustic music. The Folk Club came together when he and Christine found they had extra space at the Mill. They also own Elysium Dance Project where they provide yoga and classical and contemporary dance lessons. Joe began to imagine the space as a venue for the music he loves. He knew Celtic musician Andy Irvine would be touring the US and contacted his booking agent and to Joe’s surprise found that it would be possible to book him for July 1 in 2008. Joe’s reaction was “Holy cow, now I have to do this.”
Joe and Christine made tables, a stage, got chairs from craigslist and with the high ceilings, arched windows, and brick walls of the mill building have created a space that feels convivial and comfortable. They offer White Heron tea, Carpe Diem coffee, and snacks and pastries from Black Bean Cafe and other local bakers. The cover charge for performances goes to the artists while the sale of tea, coffee, and snacks pays the rent.
The Folk Club does not serve meals or alcohol. Joe feels this model keeps the music at the center of the club and creates a family oriented atmosphere. Some of the upcoming performances will be held in the afternoon so that parents and children can experience live music.
