Today I Saw…
…a green frog sunning itself. This one is rather bold and lets me get very close. The tadpoles in the pond are now the size of small grapes and some have tiny back legs sprouting. If all goes well this guy will soon be joined by about a thousand little friends.
The Blue Flag Irises (Iris versicolor) are in bloom now. They are native New Englanders that grow in moist places. They came a little late this year but are now a mass of blossoms.

I didn’t see it, but I heard it. As I was walking my dogs in the woods that border our property and Old Mill, I heard Highland bagpipes. I enjoyed sitting by the stream hearing music that transported me to the hills of Scotland. Truly stirring. Would love to know who it might have been!

As I walked through Vaughan Woods recently, I noticed that the jack-in-the-pulpits are up (entrance trail just past Hamilton Brook) and the sassparilla is in bloom. Sassparilla is a low growing 16 inch plant. It has one stem with three sets of leaves which shade a second stem with three balls of small white flowers. The sassparilla covers the forest floor on the main trail after you enter the park and start to climb the hill. The stems with the flowers are not as numerous as the rest of the plants with foliage. The lady slippers are in full glory, but likely to start going by soon as the weather warms and continues to be dry. I have counted about 2 dozen within sight of the trail. There are six or seven right at trails edge. The black flies are down and the deer flies haven’t come yet.
