…a pair of Pileated Woodpeckers working on a dead tree near my house. I think this is the same two who have lived here for several years. We often hear their “woody woodpecker” call and the jackhammer sound they make on the trees. It is amazing to see them.

I’ve been photographing the Downey and Hairy Woodpeckers this spring, all the while hoping I’d get to see a Pileated Woodpecker. I haven’t seen one in over three years. Once I was surprized and saw one in Vaughn Woods State Park! You’re right - it’s amazing to see them.

Hi Bak4Coffee, There are two nesting pairs of pileated woodpeckers in Vaughan Woods this year. Some years there have been three. It is not unusual to see one of them either along the main trail or the bridal loop. Look for rectangular holes pecked into the trees… that is their hallmark. There is one hole in a white pine at eye level on the trail as you enter the park. This morning I heard turkeys clucking.. the poults must be mobil now.

There are also quite often pileated woodpeckers behind Berwick Academy in the woods up on Powderhouse Hill.

The other day I saw a greyish bird with white bars on the wings.
When I looked it up on line, I found that it was probably a northern mocking bird.
