Citizens: Time to Step Up

vote.jpg Be Part of the Solution:  Run for School Board or Town Council

One seat on the SAD 35 School Board and two seats on the South Berwick Town Council will be up for election this November.  The deadline to take out papers to run in the election is September 19.  Anyone seeking to run for School Board or Town Council needs to complete a form with the Town Clerk and get at least 25 signatures from registered voters.  To get the form and to find out more about how to run, contact Town Clerk Barbara Bennett at 384-3300 or at the Clerk’s office at Town Hall.

Maine Municipal Association website has an article that describes the rewards and expectations of holding a municipal office in Maine: So You Are Thinking of Running for Local Office … GREAT!

  1. Dave Webster (Not the ex-councilor) Says:

Unfortunately for me, I have a potential conflict of interest, or I would consider running for Town Council.
There are enough of us out there who feel things could be done better.
Is there anyone who feels they could run for council and help make things run smoothly?
Someone who has ideas on what direction they feel the town should move in?
If no one runs, then they have to then hold special elections at an additional cost to the town to try to fill those positions.

  2. Dave Webster (Soon to be councilor) Says:

I’ve said it often enough, and after getting confirmation from MMA, I have decided that I will run for one of the Town Council positions that are opening up.
I will be at the Transfer Station Saturday around 8:00 am to collect signatures.
Please stop by to talk even if you don’t feel you can support me.
I’d like to hear concerns from all angles.

  3. Molly Says:

    Go Dave!

  4. Bill Says:

You know, the other Dave Webster (former Town Councilor) is running, too. The campaign signs will be very confusing!

  5. Molly Says:

I just hope you don’t have the same middle initial!

  6. Dave Webster (Soon to be councilor) Says:

They’ll be listing us by middle initial.
    I’m David E. Webster.
I’m not sure what his is.
I was thinking something along the lines of

David E. The other Webster LOL

  7. Dave Webster (Soon to be councilor) Says:

As a precaution, my signs will probably say Elect David E. Webster
His will probably say Re-elect David X Webster

  8. Bill Page Says:

    Dave Webster’s,

Thanks for stepping up. (and others unknown too)

I think you should add your middle initial, but continue to use your diner names. (Tamarack Drive, NTEC) That way, we’d all have a head start knowing the candidates and would be able to tell you apart by election day.

    Good luck.

  9. ladyjane Says:

Yes, good luck. I think it is great you are willing to dive into town politics.

  10. bss Says:

glad to hear it Dave. Good luck, look forward to chatting with you sometime before november. Thanks for jumping in.

  11. Jane C-F Says:

Just want to add a thanks too, Dave - I’ve appreciated your concern and your balanced and polite comments here.

  12. Dave Webster (Not the ex-councilor) Says:

    Thanks all,
I just need to finish getting enough signatures to be on the ballot, then we’ll see what happens.

  13. bss Says:

are you still going to the transfer station tomorrow, if so, what time?

  14. Dave Webster (Not the ex-councilor) Says:

It will depend on the weather a bit, but I’m going to try to get there around 9.
That being said, if it is busy I may not be able to stay so I don’t cause a traffic backup.

  15. MCG Says:

Watch out, Dave, there are now strict rules about where you can stand at the dump. Candidates etc. aren’t allowed to stand at the hopper any more. You have to stand off to the side by the paper recycling, and not as many people stop there because there’s limited parking.

I think it’s unfortunate, because it was nice when candidates and people with political issues got to talk with their fellow citizens. It never did any harm and the candidates weren’t in the way. It was a shame that the powers that be did away with that long tradition.

  16. Mark Says:

MCG I think you are wrong very wrong. I go to the dump to get rid of garbage not chit chat about politics. The dump is a small enough place as it is and we don’t need all the people running for town council tying up traffic. A few years ago when the dump only had one entrance the people running were at the entrance talking to every one who would listen and they were tying up the people who were trying to leave.

During the debate over the removal of the manager I stopped and talk to some people that were gathering signatures for the removal for councilors thing. It was nice and out of the way and it did not impede the other people who were doing there weekend business there.

  17. Dave Webster (Not the ex-councilor) Says:

    Mark,
I agree that the traffic flow through the Transfer Station is a concern when it comes to stopping people for a lengthy chat.
I was there on Saturday, adn I wlked down so as not to take up a parking spot.
I was very brief when talking to people and when things got busy, I did not stop anyone.
That way, the traffic flowed fairly well.

I did manage to get all the signatures I need, and turned my papers in today.
I also found out that the other Dave Webster’s middle initial is H, so we will probably be listed on the ballot as David E. Webster, and
    David H. Webster.
