To Do List: Music for the Season

ccsbholiday.jpg“A Christmas Garland,” on December 6 and 7 in South Berwick and Newington NH.

Voices raised in song have been synonymous with Christmas since the first one was said to be greeted by a chorus of angels.  In this long tradition of choral celebration, the 66-voice Community Chorus at South Berwick will present its 34th annual Christmas concert, “A Christmas Garland,” on December 6 and 7 in South Berwick, ME, and Newington NH.   The two performances will be Sunday, December 7, at 3:00 p.m. at the Wesley Kennedy Performing Arts Center at Marshwood High School; and the night before, Saturday, December 6, at 7:30 p.m. at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 22 Fox Run Road, Newington, N.H.

The Community Chorus at South Berwick has become something of a tradition itself for Seacoast music lovers, who await its concert as a beginning of the holiday season.  The chorus draws its singers and appreciative audience from across the region.  The volunteer singers range in age from teens to seniors, and come from over 18 towns and cities throughout seacoast New Hampshire and Maine.  They will be accompanied by a professional instrumental ensemble of string quintet, trumpet, recorder, and piano.

As listeners have come to expect, conductor and music director Dr. Harry Moon has selected a program blending the traditional and the contemporary.  The audience will have some opportunities to join in the singing.  Drawing the program together will be three settings of the Magnificat, the Latin canticle that depicts the joy and wonder of the Christmas story from the viewpoint of the young Mary.

Tickets are $10 at the door or $8 in advance at South Berwick Pharmacy, 289 Main Street, South Berwick, Me and York Flower Shop, 241 York Street, York, Me. Gary’s Guitars, 800 Islington Street, Portsmouth, N.H.  For more information go to  www.CCSB-SING.org.
