News from your Library for the week of April 6, 2009, brought to you by Friends of the South Berwick Public Library
Spring Cleaning
April is National Library Month, time to spruce up our little library! Please pitch in and “adopt a window” this month. Cleaning materials will be provided for volunteers to banish the winter grime that’s collected on the windows and get them sparkling. Call the library to pick a time that won’t interfere with activity in the children’s area, or just stop in and offer your services.
Spring cleaning will culminate with an outdoor cleanup party on Friday, May 8, when volunteers will be needed to scrub the porch, sweep the sidewalk and generally tidy up for the Friends of the Library book sale the following day.
Mr. Ocean
The Friends’ Library Without Walls program brought “Mr. Ocean” back to the Marshwood Great Works School for a second year. On March 25 and 26 about 200 fourth graders who have been studying regions of the U.S. heard Phil Averill’s interactive presentation on the Gulf of Maine as part of their study of New England.
A former teacher from Bristol, Maine, Averill illustrated how nearly all the streams and rivers from Maine, New Hampshire and Massachusetts feed into the Gulf, and how any pollutants in those rivers wind up in the Gulf, a unique body of water that is Maine’s richest fishing ground. He also stressed how important algae is to the health of the waters off Maine.
Last year, fourth grade teachers and students enjoyed Mr. Ocean’s appearance so much that it was agreed he should return for a new group of fourth graders. Both programs were supported by a grant from the Strawberry Festival.
Book Donations
The Friends of the Library are continuing to accept donations of gently used books, which can be left during library hours, for their annual Book Sale on May 9.
