Celebrate author Sarah Orne Jewett’s 160th birthday on Sunday, September 13 with parsnip cake and a delectable selection of readings by a local book group marking its own birthday.
“In concurrence with Historic New England’s “Year of the Kitchen” – a year-long tribute to the history and important role of kitchens – members of the Tatnic Book Group have chosen some tasty literary treats from Jewett’s rich writings,” says Peggy Wishart, South Berwick site manager for Historic New England.
The Sarah Orne Jewett Celebration will take place from 3 to 5 p.m. on the grounds of the Sarah Orne Jewett and the Jewett-Eastman Houses, at the intersection of Routes 4 and 236 in South Berwick. Admission for the event is $5 for Historic New England members and residents of the Berwicks, $10 for non-members/non-residents. Children under 12 are free.
“Through the readings, listeners will be transported back in time to the hearths, pantries and kitchens of late 19th-century Maine to look in on scenes such as a country kitchen where the chickens are welcome to roost,” Wishart explains. “They’ll witness the reunion of old friends over a hearty supper and drafts of cider, and the antics of a young lad with an undying appetite for his neighbor’s delicious doughnuts.”
The readings will be performed by the South Berwick based Tatnic Book Group, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary and the collective reading of some 178 titles.
The Sarah Orne Jewett House will be open for tours following the readings; the museum shop will offer a selection of books by and about Jewett, plus titles of local interest. The Old Berwick Historical Society will also have a table with publications for sale and information about upcoming Society events.
