Community Supper & Open House @ future home of the Library

Want to see the future home of the South Berwick Library and get to meet some of your South Berwick neighbors at the same time?  Here’s your chance:

An old-fashioned community pot luck supper will be held in the future home of the South Berwick Public Library on Sunday, Oct. 4, as part of an Open House from 3-7 p.m. The event, hosted by the Friends of the Library at the former St. Michael’s Church on Young Street, will feature musical entertainment and activities for children from 4-6 p.m.

The Library Supper will start at 5, and anyone who’s just interested in dessert should arrive by 6. Residents whose last names begin with A-G are asked to bring dessert; H-Q, a side dish or salad; and R-Z, a main dish. Beverages will be provided by the Friends. People can make it even more old-fashioned by bringing their own plates, cups, utensils and napkins, though those items will be available.

Planning for a new library for South Berwick is now in the design development phase.  JCJ Architects has begun working with the Library director and staff to determine exactly how the library will fit into the former church building.

A public forum attended by the architects will be scheduled sometime in October to gather suggestions and hear questions from South Berwick residents. That information will be used in the design development process, which will determine how Phase One and Phase Two of the building project will proceed. According to Friends chair Patti Mitchem, it will also provide more specifics about what has to be done to the building and some initial cost estimates so the Friends can begin to plan their fundraising efforts.

After design development, the next step would be construction drawings. Once they are complete the project could be put out to bid. Each step must be approved by the Town Council, and the construction project will have to be approved by local voters.
