South Berwick: Making a Difference in Haiti

Two years ago, four and fifth graders at the Great Works School in South Berwick collected 200 pounds of school supplies to send to an impoverished school in rural Haiti. Until then, the children had no pencils, erasers, papers or chalk. A year later, the Eliot-South Berwick Rotary raised $4,300 to buy the same Haitian school its first text books. In the last two years, our community has virtually kept the Eben Ezer School in Milot alive, providing not just an education, but food and caring for more than 100 students in northern Haiti.

South Berwick resident, Amy Miller never dreamed a simple four-day excursion her family took to Haiti in 2007 would create a connection like this, but the generosity of folks in our community has been so strong that the school’s founder – Lucia Anglade – made a trip to South Berwick last year to say thank you to our community.

Agnes Charlesworth and Amy Miller will be at Kittery Adult Ed Thursday, Oct. 29, to give a slide show on the Eben Ezer School, on the profoundly beautiful and tragic country it is part of, and on the connection that has been made between our community in Southern Maine and the people of Milot, Haiti. Slides will feature Agnes and Amy’s July 2009 trip, as they traveled overland through the country, delivered books and interviewed children for the sponsorship program.

The presentation, called “Making a Difference in Haiti- An Update on the Haitian School Project,” will take place 7 to 9 pm Thursday, Oct. 29 at Traip Academy in Kittery. The fee is $5, but everyone is invited, with or without $5.

Come and celebrate this great connection, or just take an arm chair trip to a place you may never visit. If you think you are interested, please call 439-5896.
